The love of money and the gifts of the holy spirit
The whole of Europe is gripped by the sensational collapse of the Greek economy, worries about market contagion striking Spain and Italy and a gloomy outlook for the future of the Euro itself. The social consequences are all too evident, youth unemployment in Greece is now a staggering 45 per cent, rioters have taken to the streets in Rome, and England is only now recovering from the latest civil disturbances by the poor and the dispossessed from inner-city areas with little lose through destroying the very communities in which they live.
Is the world mad, with the obsession with money for its own sake ? Markets have taken the idea of money itself as being something of real and tangible worth, instead of it as mere a token of worth. Money has been elevated to the lofty heights as an icon to be worshipped in its own right.
In St Pauls letter to Timothy ( Timothy 6:10 ), the young Christian from Asia Minor is reminded that “it is the love of money which is the root of all evil”; this reminds us of the words of our Lord Jesus Christ when he tells us "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal” (Matthew 6:19).
In the Rule of 1221 St Francis warns that the Brothers should not receive money ( Chapter VIII) “for we must not think or imagine there is more value in coins and money than in stones. And the devil seeks to blind those who desire money or value it more than stones”
Meanwhile on the streets of Assisi, the humble Massimo Coppo is living the Franciscan creed of poverty as he spends his days sharing the message of peace, poverty, humility with pilgrims and the crowds of international tourists who visit the mysterious and blessed town of Assisi. Massimo shares the gifts of the spirit with all who meet him and rejoices in creation with every dawning day.
The world cannot continue to live with the mad obsession with the gathering of money for its own sake and with the careless and excessive consumption of its scarce resources, with little consideration of needs of future generations. We should learn to be content and satisfied through the gifts of spirit which Massimo is sharing on the streets of Assisi. – Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude ,Knowledge, Piety and Fear of the Lord.
