- Interesting current world events -FAREWELL, OH EARTH !
The Planet “Earth” is seriously ill; the alarmed and alarming voice of the most authoritative experts on matter of ecology predict the total collapse of the “system earth” in shorter and shorter time limits. The “global warming”, this “fever” of our planet, is constantly growing, and it is seriously taken in consideration by governments and international organizations, for its devastating effects.
Whole countries – Italy and Greece are amongst them – risk desertification, and already nations like Australia are on the edge of a real ecological catastrophe. Because of the speeding up of these climate changes, the measures governments intend to take to reduce the emission of CO2, appear to be little less than palliatives, in the context of a world economy whose motto is “producing ever more, consuming ever more” with the unavoidable consequence of “polluting ever more”.
But there is “Someone” who cares about mankind’s destiny more than all of us: that God who “in the beginning created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1) and who in Christ descended on the earth to rescue us to himself. Well, that’s what the Word of God says about the final destiny of our planet: “the present heavens and the earth have been reserved for fire.…being kept until the day of judgement and destruction of the godless….the earth and everything that is done on it will be burned up….but, in accordance with His promise, we wait for new heavens and a new earth, where righteousness is at home”. These statements do not spring from some obscure “apocryphal gospel” (there is today much interest in these kind of literature from the side of people wanting to get rid of the “canonical” writings of the Bible). No, it is the very same Saint Peter – the first “Pope” – to write these things (2nd Peter 3:7,10,13). But that’s what the apostle Paul also declares (see, as an example, 2nd letter to the Thessalonians 1:6-10); indeed, many passages of the Holy Scriptures warn us of an “holocaust” destined this time not for Israel, but for a whole mankind where “lawlessness” is unrestrainably “increasing” (as to use the very words of Jesus concerning the last times, Gospel of Saint Matthew 24:12).
The Church today hesitates to proclaim to the world this “unpleasant” part of the Gospel message: the “Dies irae”, the day of God’s wrath upon on earth. Yet, that day shall arrive. And just as it happened with the plagues that scourged the pride of old Egypt, it will be the prelude and the means for the liberation of all those who in this world don’t feel “at home”, on the contrary they live badly, and “day after day are tormented in their soul” for the evil they see everywhere. In these terms Saint Peter – again in his 2nd letter 2:8 – describes how Lot felt before his departure from Sodom. “But on that day Lot left Sodom” Jesus himself says in the Gospel, comparing Lot’s day with “His” day, “it rained fire and sulphur from heaven and destroyed all of them. It will be like that on the day that Son of Man is revealed” (Gospel of Saint Luke 17:29-30).
“Listen, oh earth, where is your salvation ?” is written in a prophecy a man of Assisi had a dozen of years ago – “I make it rain according to the seasons, I, have created the sowing and the grapes harvest, but you are only able to get drunk on your own ideas. Your wicked thoughts have ruined all the beautiful things created by me, for you…” ( From the prophecy "To the pleasure seeking City" of Marcello Ciai ).
